You are never too young to start a skincare regime. Hormones can strike as young as 9 years old, being a tween can be hard enough without the complications of bad skin to navigate. Here are our top 10 tips to start looking after your tween skin.
1. Wash your face every morning and night
Do not go to bed with a dirty face, even if you didn't wear any makeup or SPF that day it is important to wash off the bacteria and dirt which has built up on your face throughout the day. You need to wash your face in the morning too as bacteria can build up overnight and it helps to prime your skin for your skincare routine. We recommend our Oh So Extra Pineapple & Coconut Face Cleanser, it is lovely and gentle and will clean the skin without stripping it.
2. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise
Even oily and acne prone skin should moisturise after cleansing as it helps the skin to regulate the oil it is producing. Our Super Nice Mānuka Honey & Vitamin E Face Moisturiser is great as it is non-comedogenic, light and nourishing. It contains Mānuka honey which is a natural anti-inflammatory which strengthens and repairs the skin's barrier function.
3. Be smart when using acne treatments
There are many products out there which can help clear up acne, they work well because they are very strong. If you use them incorrectly or too much they can dry and irritate your skin and make the situation worse. We recommend that if you are concerned about your skin that you visit your GP or dermatologist and take their guidance on what products to use.
4. Keep your fingers away from your face
The name of the game is to reduce bacteria from multiplying. Our fingers contain bacteria and by touching your face you are making the problem worse.
5. Regularly wash and change your pillow slip
For the same reason you shouldn't touch your face, you need to keep your pillow slip clean. If you have oily or acne prone skin, do this every 2-3 days. Otherwise, once a week is good.
6. Drink lots of water
Water keeps your body hydrated and helps maintain skin elasticity. If you drink lots of water, you are less likely to suffer from scarring and wrinkles. Water is essential for our body to run optimally and help nutrients to reach the skin. At a cellular level it helps flush the system, improving not only your overall health but helping your skin to glow. Experts say you should be drinking 1.5-2 liters of water a day.
7. Eat your vegetables
Think about eating the rainbow when you want to nourish your skin. The more vegetables the better! They contain powerful antioxidants that help to protect skin from damage and help cells renew quicker. The high-water content in vegetables also helps with flushing out toxins.
8.Wear SPF always
You'd have to be living under a rock not to know this, especially in NZ where the sun is so harsh. Every morning put sunscreen on - SPF 30 at a minimum, even when it is overcast. Your future self will thank you for it.
9. Exfoliate twice a week
We recommend a gentle physical exfoliant, that you use 1-2 times per week. Our Time To Shine Raspberry & Almond Gentle Face Scrub is great as it effectively removes residue and dead skin cells from your face whilst still being nourishing. To read more about exfoliation visit our blog here.
10. Try not to stress!
Stress and anxiety can have an enormous impact on your skin. So how do you stop? You need to make sure you take time for yourself and practice daily self-care. When it all starts feeling too much, try reading a book, taking a bath, or going for a walk, do what makes you feel connected and grounded. A lovely self-care practice to do regularly is a skincare treatment. We love our It's A Vibe Kiwi & Avo Face Mud Mask, it is great for problem skin as it is detoxifying whilst still being very nourishing.
