This Year's 10 Biggest Skincare Trends

Slugging? You’ve surely heard of this by now (if not, we’ll explain below!). This is just one of the many trends popping up lately. So how do you know if these are fads or if they’re here to stay? We’ll give you the lowdown on the current skincare trends and explain whether we think they’re a yay or a nay.

1. Gentle exfoliants

Our skin needs weekly exfoliation, but we don’t want to overdo it or use harsh products. We don’t want to strip out our skin or damage its delicate barrier. Exfoliating is one of the best ways to remove dead skin cell buildup and impurities. These sit on the top layer of your skin - giving you that dull, drab look. These dead skin cells also can clog up your face and leave you with nasty bumps and pimples.

Exfoliants are all made differently - different ingredients, strengths, acids so we understand it can be all a bit confusing when it comes to choosing one. Luckily enough for you, we have a special one that is super gentle but will leave you with glowing, fresh skin. It’s our very own Time To Shine Raspberry Almond Gentle Face Scrub. Suitable for sensitive skin, it contains rebalancing raspberry seed oil, hydrating almond oil and jojoba beads to physically lift dead skin cells. It also smells like a straight up snack - what more could you ask for

2. “Skinimalism”

AKA a simplified-skincare-routine - it’s the idea that our skincare shouldn’t be so complicated and include 10 different steps each day. Again, we don’t want to overdo it. You should maintain a simple, daily routine that consists of the core products - cleanser, moisturiser, and SPF in the daytime. You can also add on goodies throughout the week that supplement your skin - such as face masks and scrubs.

3. Antioxidants

Antioxidants have always been a big thing in skincare - but nowadays it’s even more trendy. Things like Vitamins C, E (tocopheryl) and B3 (niacinamide) all help the skin to repair itself and prevent environmental damage. Our Super Nice Mānuka Honey & Vitamin E Face Moisturiser will give you the daily dose of vitamin E antioxidant your skin needs - to plump it up and give a nice boost. Nourishing and protecting your skin barrier - also including mighty mānuka honey that has natural antibacterial properties and gives you a nice glow.

4. Hyaluronic acid

More people are realising its mighty power and how important it is to include in your routine - especially if you suffer from dehydrated skin! Not sure if your skin is dehydrated? Check out our helpful guide here! Hyaluronic acid is a powerful substance that keeps our skin young, dewy, plump and healthy. If you want to read more in-depth about its benefits, we also have a rundown on it here. If you want to include some in your routine, try our Very Berry Hyaluronic Hydration Jelly Face Mask which is packed full of hydrating hyaluronic acid.

5. Slugging

To slug or not to slug? Smothering your face in Vaseline and then going to bed kind of seems icky and slimy. But people have claimed it has drastically helped them with  preventing moisture loss and having healthy, glowy skin. Should you do this too? Well, we wouldn’t recommend this if you have oily, sensitive or acne-prone skin. It could end up doing way more damage, rather than good. The petroleum aka Vaseline can actually clog your pores for these skin types. Plus, we aren’t a big fan of petroleum, as it comes from a nonrenewable resource and isn’t a sustainable ingredient.  Research wisely and don’t do something just because you see everyone on TikTok doing it.

6. Gua sha

A traditional facial massage practice that has been around for thousands of years - with Chinese and Japanese origins. It involves using a “gua sha tool” - to improve blood circulation in your face and the draining of built-up fluid. Consistently doing this over time can make your face more supple and feel tighter. The draining of fluid will also help to reduce the appearance of puffiness. It’s great to do this in the mornings or late at night to see results. If you don't have a gua sha tool handy, using the knuckles on your hands also works a treat. A quick google search will tell you all you need to know!

7. Sustainability and environmentally friendly

With global warming, deforestation and pollution becoming big problems all around the world, people have been onto skincare brands for their sustainability practices. Here at Evre., we pride ourselves on being certified palm-oil free - so we aren’t contributing to the deforestation of precious habitats of animals such as orangutans. We also believe in no animal testing whatsoever - they should be left alone, not subject to experimentation - so we pride ourselves on being cruelty free. We also refuse to include any nasty chemicals, so we only select ingredients that are kind to the planet. Evre is 100% natural - and safe for both you and our environment. All our packaging is made from 100% post consumer plastic which is plastic that has been used before - essentially trash plastic!  All our tube packaging is made from sugarcane plastic.  Sugar cane is renewable and a plant which absorbs our biggest global pollutant carbon dioxide. All the cardboard we use is recyclable too. As a business we are currently working towards our B.Corp Certification which you can read about here.

8. Fermented skincare

When you think of fermentation, you probably think of yoghurt, kombucha or maybe even kimchi. But in skincare, this has become a super popular thing. Why, you ask? Well, fermented formulas apparently increase the effectiveness of certain ingredients and have also been said to absorb better into the deeper layers of the skin because of their smaller size. Bacteria break down substances into smaller bits so our skin can drink up the products much more effectively. It's like how sports drinks are better for our bodies to absorb water because of all the electrolytes, compared to normal water. Do you need fermented skincare though? If you’re in your teens to twenties, you don’t really need it - as most fermented skincare is targeted towards anti-aging or for firming benefits.

9. SPF SPF SPF!

We can’t stress this enough! Sunscreen is so very important and not just on bright, sunny days - but cloudy ones too. As you might know, NZ’s ozone layer isn’t the best, so us Kiwis are even more vulnerable to sun damage. We’re getting into the warmer months now, and with daylight savings just around the corner, you should “slip, slop, slap and wrap,” as they say!

10. Anti stress routines

This one isn’t really skincare but more self-care - something we’re all about here at Evre! This includes sleeping your 7-9 hours, staying hydrated throughout the day, mindfulness, incorporating exercise and eating healthy, nourishing foods. This will help keep your stress levels down, which will mean less bodily inflammation and better skin!
